The Houseboat Archive. Two months in.Well. I just paid my third lot of rent on the boat and suddenly I realise that I’ve been living in a floating metal box with an engine for two months, on what is essentially an old fashioned motorway. That’s two months down and just four more to go. It feels like I’ve been on [...] Christmas and New YearHad a good time really at Christmas! I mean, I’ve never had a shite one if I’m honest but part of me can be a bit scrooge mcduck because there’s often a lot of faffing about involved and I don’t really enjoy faffing. I mean someone asked me what I might be doing at Christmas [...] Bloody Boat!Ah the boat. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it. See living in a flat was always just alright, not hugely exciting but then pretty reliable. I mean its always in the same place, there’s always water coming out of the taps and always warm when you get home. The boat is a [...] My Feathered FriendsJust a quick one this, despite butchering a couple of pheasants the other day these three swans have made friends with me, even followed me up the canal this morning en route to work. I have a tendency to buy loaves of bread, then ignore them in the bread bin till they’re completely stale, which [...] I run this ship!Last night I had a realisation. The last ten days I’ve been living my life around the boat when really, it should be working for me! Mainly it manifests as little worries when I’m out and about like “has the heating come on” and “are the batteries going flat” and I kind of feel the [...] Pheasant Flambe!I was recently given a couple of Pheasants. Proper country style, fully feathered and hung by the neck. Jens friends husband shot them and had hung them for about 5 days before I was kindly donated “a brace” (that means two of them) one lunchtime. They spent half a day in and our of cold [...] I’m Aboard!I’ve finally taken over as skipper of what is surely the finest narrowboat on the whole of the Grand Union canal! Saturday I climbed aboard and unpacked most of my gear, spending the first night drinking rum, finding holes to hide stuff in and burning through about a weeks worth of logs. Seriously, it was [...] The HouseboatLay in the bath last night I looked around and asked myself why the hell I was moving out of what has to be the best flat I’ve ever lived in. It’s the best in terms of it being a four floor central London apartment right between London Bridge and Waterloo stations with private garaged [...] |
